TODAY'S Contemporary Abstract Painting Gallery #35

TODAY'S Contemporary Abstract Painting Gallery #35

Contemporary Abstract Acrylic Painting
This is the 35th in a series featuring and showcasing some of my contemporary abstract art paintings, drawings and digital experimentations.

Today's title is "A Complex History". Much of human history came from small discoveries- fire, the wheel, tools, agriculture, utensils. some shared, some kept in secret, others obscured by time. Some civilizations create massive enduring monuments, some societies are excellent sailors and fishermen, but live in primitive huts. Other great societies fly men to the moon, while nomadic tribes exist in the desert on a handful of grains. Such is the diverse and complex history of man...

From an unlikely series of structures, new forms emerge from them. Are they a composition of random selection or survival of the fittest or the smartest?

Using the gallery approach demonstrates how abstract artworks can be displayed on walls in a variety of colors.

The frame around the paintings are used for design purposes to enhance the paintings, the frame is not for sale.

Abstract art notations

While browsing my old copy of the Art of Australia, I made some notes that seem relevant today. Thoughts and ideas that guide me into always try to start anew. Hoping not to repeat past works. With a spirit of experimentation, dynamism and inventiveness.

“The Art of Australia” by Robert Hughes.
“ Good taste” feeds on the past... Being nostalgic it is a useless instrument for measuring the worth of the new.
If an artist depends on it...his ability to expand his consciousness will gradually atrophy, his style will close in on him like Poe’s shrinking room, and in the end he will be left with nothing but copied variations on a prototype he barely understands.
“Times of luxury art recur. Their feature is that art loses its ritual and dynamic character. It becomes decorative. Pictures are passive; no longer outlets through which emotion and ideas are directed on experience with intense force, they exist on plesantly equal terms with the bureau above which they hang. Both are simple objects,

Art abdicates its true role, which is to intensify experience; instead, it makes life more ingratiating by giving it a little twist here and a tweak there, drawing what sustenance it has from simple materal value. The spiritual life of its society is not strong enough to insist on some kind of expression through symbols".

Icarus: The Flight of No Return

Although warned by his father, Daedalus, not to fly too near to the sun, Icarus ignored the warning. Perhaps, it was the joy of flying, the great escape, the freedom, at last, from exile in Crete.

Daedalus, a fine craftsman, the story goes, was imprisoned by King Minos for whom he had built the Labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur. (Half man, half Bull). To escape, according to Greek Mythology, he carefully fashioned two pairs of wings, one for his son and one for himself. He spent a long time studying the flight of birds and the design of their wings. He built his wings out of feathers and wax. The design and construction worked.

Before the day of the escape, Daedalus warned his son Icarus, not to fly too close to the sun or too close to the sea. Whether by sheer euphoria, teenage zest for a thrill or he simply forgot the warning, With no altimeter to indicate the altitude, Icarus flew too close to the sun. Predictably, the wax melted, the feathers dropped out of the wings, he flapped harder, to no avail, soon he started falling and plunged to his death in the sea. Today, hang gliding, gliding, parachuting, kites and other variations have replaced feathers and wax. But thrill seekers must be careful.

Here are a few pieces of art on paper, in mixed media, I created, in the 90's, while reflecting on the myth. Other examples in this series can be found at-

Wall of Silence

Wall of Silence

In many high-crime communities, you dare not speak out or report what you see.

This Abstract artwork evolved using oil pastels, Employing layers of color then scratching away the upper surface to reveal the underlying colors. Metaphorically revealing the 'truth.' Injustice is fast and violent. Justice is slow, tedious and unreliable. Silence is safer. Safety is sense. It seems.

Painting in pieces

Abstract art, especially using the modern art technique of Collage, layering varying elements to produce something new.Two plus two equals five. Artists through the centuries have tried to produce something uniquely theirs. To use techniques, thoughts and compositions that make their artwork identifiable and individualistic. I've used disparate pieces of my work, abstract pieces from the past, combined with painted abstract, acrylic, animated backgrounds. To evoke ancient history without the representational elements. To use line and abstract colors and forms to evoke thoughts of times past. Though the elements are abstract, it triggers thoughts of man's early history.

This modern abstract collage painting is called "Meso". This and other contemporary abstract paintings, drawings, abstract modern collages, prints and other artworks can be viewed at
