More notes on Abstract Art - from Dec. 2009

More notes on Abstract Art

Further reading in the history of abstract art revealed the opening up of a new world of possibilities in modern art as the era of representational art dimmed. Also as new scientific discoveries were made, abstract art flourished in a parallel universe. Not representing, in an illustrative way, the discoveries, but an opening up of the mind of the artists.

In "Painting in the 20th Century" Werner Haftmann writes "... abstract painting offered possibilities of expressing in pictorial terms the spontaneous processes which take place within the personality. It also provided the associations and suggestions with which an inner experience of reality could be made visible. This pervasive preoccupation with the possibilities of abstract painting resulted in the fact that each painter undertook for himself a fresh speculative examination of pictorial means and formal processes. Meditation and speculation became for the contemporary painter closely related forces which held his creative work in a state of tension."

He also stated that "The inevitable effect of these reflections was that the painters perceived much more clearly the astonishing correspondences between contemporary intuitive and scientific experiences of the world and nature. The complex structure of matter, the concept of mass as dynamic energy, the concept of the magnetic field, the overlappings of time and space, of the finite and infinite, were now seen by the artist for what they really were: parallel manifestations of a more abstract experience of reality, an experience which was fully active in himself also."

Art, in this new way of thinking exploded all over the western world.

"Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes... Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an explosion into unknown areas." (Arshile Gorky)

Abstract pictures are fictive models, because they make visible a reality
that we can neither see nor describe, but whose existence we can postulate.

Abstraction vs. Realism

Abstract Art Quote I Like:
Abstraction demands more from me than realism. Instead of reproducing something outside of me,

now I go inward and use everything I’ve learned thus far in my life. (Susan Avishai)

ABSTRACT ART QUOTE:
When you see a fish you don’t think of its scales, do you? You think of its speed, its floating, flashing body seen through the water... If I made fins and eyes and scales, I would arrest its movement, give a pattern or shape of reality. I want just the flash of its spirit. (Constantin Brancusi)

Kandinsky defines art

Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for color, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential. (Wassily Kandinsky)

What's your definition?

Kandinsky's quote

The early origins of abstract art...
What was going through Kandinsky's head...

“clashing discords, loss of equilibrium, ‘principles’ overthrown, unexpected drumbeats,  great questionings, apparently purposeless strivings, stress and longing(apparently torn apart), chains and fetters broken (which had united many) opposites and contradictions - this is our harmony.”
Wassily Kandansky, 1912

'Disparate Lives' Art By E. Moo Young

Abstract art fusing mixed media, collage, acrylic painting and pen and ink drawing.

Even in close families, we live disparate lives. Pursuing diverse journeys,
some descending into Dante's Inferno while others soar into the stratosphere.
Part of the unfolding of a Divine Plan.

From the Artists Mouth: 10 Abstract Art Quotes

From the Artists Mouth: 10 Abstract Art Quotes

To better understand and appreciate abstract art, the artists own words can be a useful guide.
Some quotes are deep and profound. Some are difficut and obscure. Some are strange and puzzling. Others give an insight into their thinking and execution.

1. Abstraction is real, probably more real than nature. I prefer to see with closed eyes. (Josef Albers)

2. When I paint, I liberate monsters... They are the manifestations of all the doubts, searches and groping for meaning and expression which all artists experience... One does not choose the content, one submits to it. (Pierre Alechinsky)

3. When a painter thinks to disengage from the world outside himself and fantasies unprecedented forms he thinks he will make a painting, he finds in this expression the same effect - I would even say the same picture - that he had unconsciously acquired by his habit to experience reality intensely. (Pierre Alechinsky)

4. People think you can get out your canvas and paint any time you have a free moment. You can’t. Commercial art and painting are entirely different. Painting takes a different mental approach. You have to get the right attitude, the right mood. (Pierre Alechinsky)

5. Abstraction demands more from me than realism. Instead of reproducing something outside of me,
now I go inward and use everything I’ve learned thus far in my life. (Susan Avishai)

6. Abstract art today needs no defense. It has become one of the many ways to paint or carve or model. But it is not yet a kind of art which people like without some study and some sacrifice of prejudice. (Alfred H. Barr Jr.)

7. If you work with abstract painting for a period of time, you may come to think of it as a melody, a song, a piece of beautiful music. (Judi Betts)

8. All paintings are abstract. Some abstract paintings also have pictorial representation or narrative content, but in essence they are first and foremost abstract because we have only paint. (Robert Bissett)
pattern or shape of reality. I want just the flash of its spirit. (Constantin Brancusi)

9. Abstract art is a fundamental distrust of the theory of reality concocted by the eyes. (Robert Brault)

10. When you see a fish you don’t think of its scales, do you? You think of its speed, its floating, flashing body seen through the water... If I made fins and eyes and scales, I would arrest its movement, give a pattern or shape of reality. I want just the flash of its spirit. (Constantin Brancusi)

The abstract painter considers the realist painter to be the abstract painter and himself the realist because he deals realistically with the paint and does not try to transform it into something that it is not. (Jimmy Leuders)
