TODAY'S Contemporary Abstract Painting Gallery #35

TODAY'S Contemporary Abstract Painting Gallery #35

Contemporary Abstract Acrylic Painting
This is the 35th in a series featuring and showcasing some of my contemporary abstract art paintings, drawings and digital experimentations.

Today's title is "A Complex History". Much of human history came from small discoveries- fire, the wheel, tools, agriculture, utensils. some shared, some kept in secret, others obscured by time. Some civilizations create massive enduring monuments, some societies are excellent sailors and fishermen, but live in primitive huts. Other great societies fly men to the moon, while nomadic tribes exist in the desert on a handful of grains. Such is the diverse and complex history of man...

From an unlikely series of structures, new forms emerge from them. Are they a composition of random selection or survival of the fittest or the smartest?

Using the gallery approach demonstrates how abstract artworks can be displayed on walls in a variety of colors.

The frame around the paintings are used for design purposes to enhance the paintings, the frame is not for sale.

Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Painting
This is the 34th in a series featuring and showcasing some of my contemporary abstract art paintings, drawings and digital experimentations.
Today's title is "The Great Leap Backwards". Sometimes you think you're progressing. Moving forward. Then a series of events explode. Setting back, obliterating all the gains that were made. We hope we're learning from the history of the past.

Rapid slashes of acrylic paint obscure the early drawings.

Using the gallery approach demonstrates how abstract artworks can be displayed on walls in a variety of colors.

Abstract Mixed Media Drawing - "Figure emerging from trance"
This is the 33rd in a series featuring and showcasing some of my contemporary abstract art paintings, drawings and digital experimentations.
Today's title is "Figure emerging from trance". Free flowing pen lines fleshed out a figure emerging from trance, somewhat bewildered. Mixed media drawing includes pen lines, acrylic paint, markers and watercolor.

TODAY'S Contemporary Digital Fusion Gallery #32

Abstract Digital Fusion - "Exultations"
This is the 32nd in a series featuring and showcasing some of my contemporary abstract art paintings, drawings and digital experimentations.
Today's title is "Exultations". These were photos taken at a religious ceremony. The movement, celebrations, colors, energy and devotion were what caught my eye. Then using the photos as a starting point I experimented with many digital tools. The aim was to experiment with the shapes, forms, colors and textures, to reduce them to their most basic forms. Making each composition as different as possible. Religion plays an important role in people's lives, culture and behavior, this was a snippet of one such ceremony.

Using the gallery approach demonstrates how abstract artworks can be displayed on walls in a variety of colors.

TODAY'S Contemporary Abstract Drawing Online Gallery #31

TODAY'S Contemporary Abstract Drawing Online Gallery #31

Contemporary Abstract Art Painting - "Darwin's Random Selection"
This is the 31st in a series featuring and showcasing some of my contemporary abstract art paintings and drawings.
Today's title is "Darwin's Random Selection". This original abstract artwork combines pen and ink drawing, pastels, watercolor, and acrylic paint on paper, mounted on card. The title came at the end of the process, as an ape-like figure appeared at the top. The drawing started as a wandering line traversing the invisible plains. The theory of evolution is a topic of sharp and discordant views. Which side are you on?

Browsing through a '97 issue of Vanity Fair, articles devoted to issues on saving Africa, "Out of Africa" caught my eye. An intriguing article by Spencer Wells, While Homo sapiens can be traced to around 200,000 years ago in the fossil record, it is remarkably difficult to find any archaeological record of our species between 80,000 and 50,000 years ago, and genetic data suggests that, due to extreme climatic conditions, the population eventually dwindled to as few as 2000 individuals.
To quote " And then something remarkable happened. It began slowly, with only a few hints of explosion to come. The first stirrings were ART - tangible evidence of advanced, abstract thought - and a significant improvement in the types of tools humans made. Then, around 50,000 years ago, all hell broke loose. The human population began to expand, first in Africa, then leaving the homeland to spread into Eurasia." It's a fascinating article. Read Vanity Fair, July 2007.

Using the gallery approach demonstrates how abstract artworks can be displayed on walls in a variety of colors.

The frame around the painting is used for design purposes to enhance the paintings, the frame is not for sale.

Abstract art notations

While browsing my old copy of the Art of Australia, I made some notes that seem relevant today. Thoughts and ideas that guide me into always try to start anew. Hoping not to repeat past works. With a spirit of experimentation, dynamism and inventiveness.

“The Art of Australia” by Robert Hughes.
“ Good taste” feeds on the past... Being nostalgic it is a useless instrument for measuring the worth of the new.
If an artist depends on it...his ability to expand his consciousness will gradually atrophy, his style will close in on him like Poe’s shrinking room, and in the end he will be left with nothing but copied variations on a prototype he barely understands.
“Times of luxury art recur. Their feature is that art loses its ritual and dynamic character. It becomes decorative. Pictures are passive; no longer outlets through which emotion and ideas are directed on experience with intense force, they exist on plesantly equal terms with the bureau above which they hang. Both are simple objects,

Art abdicates its true role, which is to intensify experience; instead, it makes life more ingratiating by giving it a little twist here and a tweak there, drawing what sustenance it has from simple materal value. The spiritual life of its society is not strong enough to insist on some kind of expression through symbols".

More notes on modern art

More notes on Modern Art over the years

Looking back on some old notebooks, these quotes have remained in my thoughts about modern art and especially abstract art and its history. The turning point in the thinking of artists like Cezanne, Picasso and the father of abstract art-Kandinsky. The sequence that led to the rejection of the art that preceded it.
They coincided with my own thoughts but better articulated by various writers.

Both are simple objects, Art abdicates its true role, which is to intensify experience; instead, it makes life more ingratiating by giving it a little twist here and a tweak there, drawing what sustenance it has from simple materal value. The spiritual life of its society is not strong enough to insist on some kind of expression through symbols.

Painting in the 20th Century by Werner Haftmann-
Ideas underlying modern art
“ Modern Art differs radically from art of the past because of a profound change in the thinking of artist concerned. They arose to a lesser extent from the thinking of Hegel, Fieller, Croce and Bergson, but a larger extent from diliberations which could not be disregarded, as they arose in actual artistic practice, in the dialogue of the painter with visible nature and the search for the elements which could make the painting a self existent organism and for the expressional power of purely pictorial means.
... the interactivity of intuition and intellect in which spontaneous vision is intellectually scrutinized is highly characteristic of modern painting.
...to be appreciated (a modern painting) one has to look with discerning scrutinity, and with an understanding of the true nature: the products of observation, the visual experiences of reality, of creation, and with the confrontation with the colours and forms evoked by these experiences.
... it arose (the new relationship) in the revolutionary discovery that visible reality is only one manifestation of the real, that the inner world posseses just as concrete a reality, as much truth and reality as the images.

Much more notes are hidden in other notebooks, to be continued in the future.

New feature starting tomorrow

Wednesday's Online Art Gallery

Starting tomorrow there will be a new feature. I'll be showcasing 3 or 4 pieces of art in an online gallery format. The works change every week with a new color background and a new layout to show how differently shaped pieces can fit, in a balanced way, on a wall. The pieces are framed for discussion and layout purposes only. The frames are not for sale.

Look out for Wednesday's Online Art Gallery tomorrow and let me know what you think.

Personage compressed

The abstract artwork: "Personage Compressed" evolved from loose wanderings of oil pastel on a diagonal plane. The personage, restricted by rules, regulations and conformity feels compressed, stressed. Imprisoned. Is there a route to decompress?

Quotes from Kandinsky

In my quest to better understand the radical shifts in the approach that some artists took, at the early part of the 20th century, I began to look a little closer at Wassily Kandinsky. In the "Blaue Reiter" by Hajo Duchting, there's a detailed account of the thoughts by Kandinsky and Franz Marc about the new direction and radical changes that led to the Blaue Reiter and later abstract art.

One quote exemplifies their thinking -

"clashing discords, loss of equilibrium
'principles' overthrown, unexpected drumbeats,
great questionings, apparently purposeless strivings,
stress and longing (apparently torn apart),
chains and fetters broken
(which had united many)
opposites and contradictions - this is our harmony"
Wassily Kandinsky, 1912

Naturally, when their almanac with their philosophy and exhibition finally saw the light of day, the initial reactions were 'negative and indeed even hostile. Favorable responses were limited: solidarity with the new aims extended no further than a small circle of artists, critics, collectors and museum directors. What is now recognized as a pioneering achievement by this small group of artists, as the advent of Modernism in Germany, in its own day appeared simply as a marginal event with no enduring influence upon the culture of Wilhelmine Germany.'

4 Abstract Drawings

Above are 4 Abstract Mixed media drawings. Derived from an intuitive process, with free flowing lines and acrylic colors, oil pastels and markers. They are entitled-

"Monolith"
"Necessary Elements"
"Night & Day Shift"
"Non-Specific Object"

I'm reminded of a quote from Wassily Kandinsky, considered the originator of abstract art-"painting is an art, and art in general is not a mere purposeless creating of things that dissipate themselves in a void, but a power that has a purpose.... it is a language that speaks in its own unique way to the soul..." - Wassily Kandinsky, 1912.

Comparing mats

In choosing a color mat for your painting or drawing, it's wise to test a range of colors with the frame selected. Sometimes the mat can be harmonious to hues in the painting, or it can be a strong contrast or many believe it should be plain white, so that the focus remains on the artwork. For others a neutral color is best. What do you think?

Abstract art:The Rules have changed

Abstract artwork on paper. Each piece is like a personal visual diary. Instead of words, there are shapes and forms. Forms extending, overlapping, some in a parallel relationship to each other. Colors combine, confront and contrast against each other. It's a world of visual challenges. The rules of art has changed, the world is also changing fast... and furious. Abstract art can acomodate all thoughts and forms... even when the rules have changed.

Abstract art: "Tottering"

The abstract drawing "Tottering" is a random structure of shapes, colors and forms linked together in an abstract manner. Completed in 2001, it alludes to once invincible structures and characters that have since tottered then tumbled. How many can you guess and name?

The pen and ink drawing is colored by acrylic paint, markers and oil pastels.

"Swept" -mixed media drawing

Swept, mixed media drawing on paper.

Swept, going with the flow. Some have said, only dead fish and leaves go with the flow. Swept, by the need to obey the rules, to act with conformity. Some are swept by passion to "take no more" and risk everything for a cause. Some are swept by a strong current, a tsunami, to resist is futile. Others are swept by peer pressure, by love, by hate.

Abstract Art: Monolithic

Starting to muse about an abstract drawing can 'open a can of worms.' Well, metaphorically anyway. As a line rambles across the paper, new vistas emerge. New forms. New directions. Leading to a new perception, delicately balancing on the periphery of the work, then retreating and returning to a previously recorded area.

Monolithic, a brain-like mass, a homage to brain power and the epic achievements of man. Still, desertification of once fertile areas, continue its relentless trek. Can brain-power be used to create artificial lakes in the desert? Many predict water will become our most precious commodity. Can the engineers start creating the artificial lakes, fed by rivers that pour their resources into the sea. Save the earth, save the people, create artificial lakes in the desert.

Using a ball-point pen, later switching to pen and ink, adding touches of pastel, building the form, a sinewy mass, waiting to be sculpted. Acrylic paint provide the aqueous ground that cements the monolithic structure. A new structure emerges. The experiment continues...
